Update from this weekends MTB National Championships – Cannock Chase – Sunday 24th July

Words by David Fletcher

The event was held at Cannock Chase a course and centre I train on regularly. The day was expected to be wet so a tough day was on the cards.

I got an average start coming into the first technical section in 6th place. With the course being tight and twisty with little passing places I was happy to settle in. The first lap went by and there was a front group of 5. I managed to make the cut and settled comfortable knowing I had plenty in the tank. Luck again was soon to pass and with less than a quarter of a lap past I fell heavily on my side wrapping myself round a tree and knocking my side. With a slightly dead left leg I carried on pushing to get back to the front and back in contention for the jersey. I pulled the gap to 15 seconds.

From here it continued to stay that way for a 4 more laps.

The 4 leaders upfront were working well and kept the pace high knowing I was only just round the corner. Being stuck in no mans land I began to tire and suffered another heavy fall with a lap and a half to go. A little dazed from a heavy blow to the head and a little dizzy I continued and aim to keep my position. With a rider less than a minute adrift I had to keep the pace on.

Coming into the final stretch of the race I realised I had managed to stick it out and finish in 5th. Not the result I had hoped for but considering the issues a result I feel was deserved.

Any mistake on a slippy and hard course physically like the weekend would be costly. The season isn’t all over I still have the final round of the national series and the overall series podium to contend for.

The day started well. A nice relaxed morning with a nice tempo ride to the course. With it only being 20miles away i figured that it would be a nice little warm up and an extra few miles in the bank leading into the nationals and also the cyclocross season.

Arriving at the course i had my pre race meal and after set out for a easy lap of course practice. Racing here before i had a rough idea of the course already. A fun twisty course with some steep climbing would make it for a hard day. With little rest i had to pace myself.

From the whistle i was straight into the lead and pacing out the 4 entrants. Taking the 1st lap in my stride i settled in and let the others come to the front. Begining to feel not quite myself a hard attack from one of the other riders i was pushed off the back and in a dismal 4th. Catching 3rd on the 3rd of 5 laps I continued to keep my pace. Not quite having the ride id hoped i rolled in 3rd and feeling like id been hit by a bus!

With an easy week planned to nationals and all mechanical issues sorted im hoping to change this weekends ride to a better and higher place come next weekend.

Midlands XC – Saturday 24th June

Words by David Fletcher:

Quietly confident I came into todays race with a good amount of motivation, with a good weeks training under my belt and consistent rise in form i knew i could do well. I’ve  rode Park Wood Springs before, a rocky and fun man made course with a small amount of off piste on the far side to mix it up.

Once the whistle blew i was straight into the top 3 and riding strong. By the time it came to the end of the first lap there was just 2 of us. Myself and a junior holding on for dear life as i pushed the pace to make him work. Eventually the laps went by and i was on my own, the rider i was with suffered from the pace and slipped on a corner crashed into the gravel.
I held my pace and pushed to the finish keeping consistent and riding as smooth as i could whilst still making the most of the race.
Eventually the finish line came and took a strong convincing win, knowing there was a little more left in the tank i could take confidence away and use it for the up and coming events.

From here i have a good block of training and racing guiding me into the national champs at cannock chase. A good course for me and one Ive ridden countless times in the past. Hopefully il be able to get some time in on the course and come into the fit and ready to go.
